Julia’s birthday was yesterday. She turned eight.

These days, most of the birthdays we celebrate are family parties.

When the older boys were little, I wore myself out every year trying to have a party for each of them, so now they get big parties (meaning other than family members) for only certain birthdays.

A couple of my children who don’t like the limelight still opt for having just our family.

Not Julia…she wants to invite our extended family, the neighbors, and anyone else she can sneak in. She likes the big party.

Imagine getting the invitation to this party, “Come, follow me.”

When I read that yesterday, my heart fluttered a little.

Originally, Jesus only sent out 12 invites.

And He asked unlikely, ordinary people.

And He said to them, “Come, follow me.”

No details other than that.

No address to where they were going.

No description about what they were going to be doing.

No idea when His party was going to end.

All open-ended.

Just an invitation to follow.

And, now, this invitation is ours…{my heart flutters again}.

Don’t make it more complicated than it is.

Just follow.

Stop striving to be better than you are.

And follow.

It’s an open invitation.

But not many will join…not really join.

Because it’s not an invitation to make life more comfortable and safe.

It’s an invitation to an extreme party, where everything is on the line.

…that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death… (Phil 3:10)

It’s not enough just to get the invitation anymore…it’s all about the party…and the party?

It’s where He is.
